Last month on my way to Cape Town  I landed in the middle of bad roadworks on the highway. I decided to go off the beaten track and find a way around the chaos.

I was not disappointed! The road took me through Trompsburg, and I decided to stop for some coffee and a snack at a local coffee shop: The “Waterwiel Bakhuis”

The colourful decorations outside the shop, complete with a small waterwheel invites weary travelers in for some sustenance and a breath of fresh air. as you enter the shop the left wall is decorated with tools from an age gone by, and on the right a beautiful cabinet decorated with porcelain dolls.

The furniture is farm-style, and the food follows the same tradition.

Overseas travelers can do well to take the detour and experience some of the Karoo and Southern Free State hospitality. Anyone who passes through Trompsburg will be a poorer person for not visiting this haven!

South Africa truly has a lot to offer for those who want to start looking beyond the obvious.
